Neighbour Food Collection returns to Brighton in July for the sixth time since inception as part of FareShare’s rigorous campaign against hunger and food waste across the UK.
This year, FareShare partners again with Tesco as it had done in previous editions of the Food Collection series and all of Tesco’s stores across Brighton and Hove buzzed with activities as customers were engaged in giving to the needy.
Fundraising and Communications Manager at FareShare Sussex, Beth Parry, said: “Tesco are currently our largest supplier but we work with a large number of different suppliers, including Pret a Manger which support us as a supplier and funder and sponsor one of our three delivery vans.”
In addition to food donated by willing shoppers, Tesco gives an extra th
irty percent to the collection and the items are then passed on to The Trussell Trust, a foundation that oversees over 400 food banks in the country.
According to FareShare Sussex’s reports, this collaboration contributed to “more than fifteen million meals last year and about 149,000 people were fed every week.”
Most of the shoppers who participated at the Hove store were willing and generous towards the food trolleys at the store entrances.
One of the shoppers, Mrs Hannah Munro, said: “FareShare is doing a fantastic job. You will be surprised at the number of people who really need these food items but cannot afford them.”
Another Tesco customer said: “I’m very happy to be helping out like this. My family and I do this all the time.”
Some other participants also took to Twitter sharing pictures and activities with the hashtag #everycanhelps
More than twenty trolleys filled with canned soups, canned fruits, pasta, tea, coffee and biscuits were collected in each shop at the end of each day.
